This is going to be another quick and dirty Jkm7680 style drivers review. This time it’s for a 2012 Ford Fusion SE-Something or other.

Kinja'd!!!

Acceleration 4/10

It’s less ew than a comparable Corolla and the gas pedal doesn’t have a massive dead zone in it before the car actually decides to move. You touch the pedal and the car goes, it’s not spectacular but it has enough power to get you around town. The powerband is fairly linear, but the transmission falls behind often. I did find myself nearly flooring it in hilly environments though to maintain my speed.

Braking 6/10

The brakes are very touchy. If you so far as tap the brake pedal very slightly, you’ll feel it. They stop the car well, better than a Corolla does. Corolla brakes actually don’t stop the car, the wall you crash into does on the other hand.

Transmission 6/10

The transmission shifts smoothly and quietly, no jerks and it shifts when you need it to and doesn’t when you don’t want it to. It’s a little weak feeling under full throttle acceleration or up hills, but otherwise it’s perfectly adequate.

Steering 7/10

The steering is at the perfect balance of light and not so light, it’s a little bit vague feeling but moves the car around well.

Suspension 7/10

Bumps are absorbed good and body roll is very minimal. It easily feels like a sporty car instead of an economy sedan with a 4 banger.

Other notes: The interior is very, very quiet and so is the engine. Little to no wind noise and the seats are nice and comfy.

The Fusion was a pleasant surprise. Would I buy one? No. I would recommend one to aging Elementary School Teachers, your Aunt Ethel, gas station clerks with history of domestic violence and nursing students.

11/10 - It’s like Skyrim but with Ford Fusions.

American car companies love naming their engines stuff like that. Ecotec, Duratec, Vortec. I think even MB got in on the act, although they add the H to Bluetech.

Yeah, I dunno what’s up with that. It’s a trend now.

Ecoboost...

I like the sport trims of these Fusions. They get the 3.5 V6, which makes it a pretty quick car. 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and it looks pretty nice with the sport add ons, to me. Especially in Candy Red Metallic. I apologize for the dealership photo, I couldn’t find many Candy Red pictures.

I always thought Turbo-HydraMatic was a pretty dorky name for something as cool and mysterious and obviously designed-by-aliens as a totally mechanical, non-computer-controlled automatic transmission. (Think about it—the throttle body is basically a hydraulic computer . WHOA.)

Valve body, I meant, not throttle body.

In my view, the transmission and acceleration would be improved with a manual... assuming you like driving a car with a manual.

I’ve driven some modern vehicles with modern 6+speed automatics. And while they’re better than past automatics, I find I *still* get better real-world fuel economy and performance with a manual.

It would be a different story if I had a really high-powered car I was taking to the drag strip though.

I’m not interrested in the slightest in buying a Fusion, so it doesn’t matter to me. Personally, automatic cars feel faster.

I’ve always found that automatics feel slow... at least on lower powered cars. With a manual, you can rev the engine and pop the clutch and get a good launch.
